Phillip vs South Van Vancouver is well known to longboarders as a place full of innovation and talent. People may have heard of the British properties and Cypress Mountain, but little is known about the in-city thrashing mecca, the South Van Alleys. In this Episode of the Eh-Team, Phillip takes us out to check out his favorite back alleys. South Vancouver is mostly residential, situated on a south facing slope that leads down to the North arm of the Fraser River. The best skating is in the eastern end of south van, where the roads are longer and curved. The neighborhood has a real variety of different slopes, generally starting with mellow easy cruising sections, down to really steep close to 18% areas. The area had a slow start, 3 or 4 years ago very few people knew about the great skate terrain, most had only heard rumors. Word has spread; now most Coast longboarders have skated the area and fallen in love with the diverse terrain, ideal for hard shredding or easy cruising. On any given evening you can go for a rip with a couple guys and you'll run into another group doing the same thing. South Van is packed full of banked back alleys of all sizes, perfect pavement, gnarly pavement, and a golf course, which is fairly difficult to barge. There are several routes people usually stick to, most ending at a bus loop where you shuttle back to the top for another run. The bus drivers are really nice, and they are a key part of the operation so everyone treats them well. South Van is a great time, everyone sees the alleys differently, pointing out new spots to sesh, slash or early grab, pushing the limits or taking it easy and cruising. People of all skill levels can learn, improve, and most importantly, shred the gnar. Enjoy! |
